Author Traci Dunham visited The West Hill School this week to read her two books, The Oyster’s Secret and My Sister Lulu and Me, with the students and discuss the importance of appreciating differences.
The Oyster’s Secret is an engaging and beautifully illustrated children’s book that reinforces West Hill’s theme of diversity and the importance of inner beauty when understanding oneself and others. Following the story, Ms. Dunham spoke with the students about what makes each of them special and how they can share their own special inner beauty and respect the inner beauty of those around them. The children then had the opportunity to feel an actual oyster shell and see the beauty of real pearls.
My Sister Lulu and Me is a thoughtful telling of the bond between two uniquely special sisters and their experiences as they navigate everyday life. The story encourages children to embrace what makes them uniquely special and introduces the conversation of acceptance of differences. Ms. Dunham also shared the story of her real-life inspiration for her book – her daughter Caroline – and how Caroline’s unique specialness helped shaped her family and taught them all unconditional love.
